# What a Range Hood Motor Replacement Costs, and When It Is Not the Motor

A hood motor is one of the easiest parts in this trade to quote and one of the easiest to buy without needing to.

## Kitchen hood motor replacement cost: why the wrong part gets sold here

The complaint is always the same sentence: it runs and the kitchen does not clear.

That sentence fits a failing blower. It also fits a wheel caked in grease, a saturated filter, a duct crushed above a ceiling, a joint that came apart in 2019, and an exterior flap that has rusted shut. Six causes, one description, and only one of them is a motor.

From inside the kitchen there is no way to tell them apart by looking. So the honest sequence is measurement first and parts last.

## The sequence, and what each step removes

**Measure the airflow.** At the hood, with an instrument. This is the step that separates "loud but working" from "quiet and doing nothing", and it is the reading most owners have never seen.

**Wash the filters, measure again.** Over a griddle a saturated baffle takes a startling share of the airflow. If the second reading is transformed, the job is finished and it cost nothing.

**Follow the duct.** Out of the hood, through whatever it passes, to the outside. This is where most of the genuinely broken systems are, and none of it can be seen from the kitchen.

**Look at the exterior cap.** From outside, with the fan running. The flap should be standing open. Painted shut, corroded, or occupied is a routine finding in this climate.

Only after all four does a motor become the answer — and by then it is an answer rather than a guess.

## What the figure is made of

The motor itself is the smaller half on most installations. What moves the number is access: a liner inside somebody's millwork, an outdoor canopy that has to be supported while it is opened, and the question of whether the housing survived.

That last one is why noise matters. Caught while it is still a sound, this is a motor. Left until the wheel has been running out of balance for a year, the housing is scored and the job is considerably larger.

## The outdoor version

On a hood over a grill, add corrosion to everything above and move it to the front of the list.

The mounts holding an outdoor canopy are structure rather than fixings. A rattle that has appeared over a grill deserves looking at promptly — not because a noisy fan is urgent, but because the thing making the noise may be what is holding the canopy up.

That check comes before any conversation about a motor.
