# What Outdoor Ice Machine Maintenance Costs, and What Skipping It Costs

Most maintenance is insurance. On an outdoor ice machine it is arithmetic, because everything it neglects makes everything else worse.

## Ice machine maintenance cost: three things loading at once

**The condenser.** It rejects heat by moving air across a coil, and in an island that air carries salt, dust, pollen and whatever the landscaping is doing. As it loads, heat leaves more slowly and every freeze cycle runs longer.

**The evaporator.** Water leaves minerals behind. As scale builds, the ice does not release as cleanly and the harvest takes longer, so the machine spends more of each hour working.

**The drain.** Every ice machine grows biofilm in it. That is where the taste comes from first and the blockage comes from later.

Individually each of those is a nuisance. Together they mean the compressor is running hours it was designed to rest through, inside a hot box, in a hot month.

## What the planned visit actually is

Mostly access. Reaching the coil in an undercounter unit set into an island generally means drawing the cabinet forward — whatever a brush reaches through the vent grille is not what is choking it.

Then the coil and the fan cleaned together, because a spotless coil behind a fouled fan moves no more air than before. The drain flushed and watched rather than poked at. The evaporator descaled where the water here warrants it. And temperatures and run behavior recorded before and after, so the value of the work is a number rather than an opinion.

## What the unplanned one looks like

It arrives in July, because that is when a machine that has been coping stops coping.

By then the compressor has spent a season running long cycles at high head pressure. Sometimes the answer is still a clean and the machine recovers completely. Sometimes it is a part. And occasionally it is the conversation nobody wants, where a sealed system that has been working at its limit for years is not worth putting right in a cabinet of that age.

The service does not guarantee against that. What it does is stop the conditions that produce it.

## Setting your own interval

We photograph the condenser when we open it, and that photograph is more useful than any general recommendation.

A machine four miles inland under a roof looks different from one four blocks from the water beside a hedge. Yearly is the honest default on this coast; twice a year where the evidence says so. You get to see the evidence.

## The one that is not worth maintaining

An indoor undercounter machine fitted into an outdoor island. We find them, and the honest answer is that it is running beyond its rated ambient with electrics never sealed for rain and salt.

Maintaining it postpones a failure that is not economic to repair. If that is what is in your island we will say so plainly rather than taking money to delay it.
