### Cheap work with an expensive alternative

Water inside a cold cabinet is almost never a refrigerant leak — refrigerant is a gas at these pressures and does not collect in puddles. Every cold machine makes water and has a planned route for it, and when that route blocks the water finds its own. Outdoors there is a second source an indoor unit never has, and the two feed each other: a tired seal lets humid air in, that air condenses, the extra water overwhelms a drain sized for ordinary frost melt, and the standing water then sits against the seal. Treating either half alone puts the puddle back within a month, which is why they are done together.

Find the water's route rather than its puddle

Where it collects is rarely where it starts. The drain channel, the tray and the path between them are followed end to end.

Clear and prove the drain

Poured through and watched, not poked at and assumed. A drain that passes slowly will block again before the season is out.

Deal with the seal at the same time

Because on an outdoor cabinet the seal is usually what is making the water the drain cannot cope with.

### Could it be a refrigerant leak?

No, and that is good news. A machine low on refrigerant fails to cool rather than making water. Liquid in the base of a cabinet is a water problem, and water problems on this equipment are among the cheapest things we fix.

### Can I clear the drain myself?

A flush of warm water down the channel clears a good number of them and is worth trying. What we would avoid is pushing anything rigid into the drain tube — it runs behind the cabinet where nobody can reach what has been dislodged.
