# DCS grill burner replacement

### Burn-through at the ends, not the hole you can see

Burners are consumables on an outdoor grill here, and the failure to look for is not the obvious one. They burn through at the ends first, where the flame is least supported and the metal is thinnest, and a burner failing that way puts heat where the design never intended it — into the radiants above and the firebox below. So a burner is taken out and looked at in daylight rather than judged through a firebox, and its neighbors are inspected at the same time, because what it has been doing to them is part of the job. Where a set is the same age, replacing it together costs less per burner than the three visits it saves.

Take them out and look at them off the grill

Inside a firebox, under radiants, a burner looks fine until it is in daylight. We check the ports along the whole length, the ends where burn-through starts, and the venturi where the air is mixed.

Fit, seat and prove the mixture

A burner that is not seated over its orifice will light and run badly forever. Seating is checked, the air shutter set where the design calls for it, and the flame watched until it settles blue rather than glanced at while it is still yellow from lighting.

Check what the failed burner did to its neighbors

A burner that has burned through has been putting heat somewhere it should not. Radiants above it, the firebox beneath it and the ignitor beside it are inspected before the job is closed.

### Do all the burners have to be done at once?

Not as a rule, and we will say when one still has a season in it. Where they were installed together and one has gone, the others are usually close behind, and doing them in a single visit is cheaper than the visits it prevents.

### Why check the radiants at the same time?

Because a burner that has burned through has been directing heat at them from an angle they were not built for. Warped or holed radiants stop shedding drippings sideways and start funnelling them onto the new burner, which is how a fresh set fails early.
