# DCS filter and duct service

### Most of the value is in the duct, not the filters

Filters are the visible half and they matter — over high-output burners or a griddle they load fast, and a saturated baffle is both a restriction and fuel sitting above open flame. But the half that defeats a hood entirely is inside the building: flexible ducting crushed by somebody working in a tight ceiling, a joint that separated years ago and now vents into a void, an exterior cap whose flap has corroded shut or been painted over. A perfectly healthy blower proves nothing against any of those, which is why the route is followed rather than the fan tested and declared sound.

What this involves

Loaded filters over a griddle are a fire question, not a housekeeping one

A wall cap with a nest in it is a routine finding here, not an exotic one

Any blower loses to a crushed or blocked duct

Filters out, cleaned, and the difference measured

Airflow before and after, so the value of the work is a number rather than an opinion.

Follow the duct to the outside

As far as it can be followed. Crushed flexible sections, disconnected joints and dampers that no longer open are all common and all invisible from the kitchen.

Check the exterior cap

Nests, paint, corrosion and a flap that has stopped moving. Outdoors this is where the hood's performance actually ends.

### How far can you actually follow the duct?

As far as it goes, where it is accessible, and honestly reported where it is not. A run buried above a finished ceiling can be inspected at its ends and inferred in the middle, and we say which of those we are doing rather than implying more.

### Is airflow measured before and after?

Yes, so the value of the work is a number rather than an impression. It is also the most persuasive argument for washing filters regularly that we have found — people believe the reading in a way they do not believe the advice.
