### Which half is dead tells us where to start

Lights alive with no blower, or a blower running with no lights, points at a control or at that one circuit. Everything dead together points at the supply or the board. That single answer is usually known before anybody rings and it decides where the testing begins. What differs is why: above a high-output range these components are heat-aged, and lamp holders cooked by years of rising heat fail in a way that looks like bad bulbs. On an outdoor hood they are water-aged instead, and the repair has to include re-routing and sealing or the same page gets sold twice.

Establish which half is affected

Lights, blower, or both. That single answer decides where the testing starts and it is usually known before we arrive.

Open the housing and test the path

Holder, switch, control, connections and earth. Above a range these are all heat-aged; outdoors they are all water-aged.

Replace back to sound material and prove every function

Not just the failed item. Then every speed and every light, in front of you.

### The speed control only works on one setting.

Look at the switching before the blower — a control that has shed some of its positions turns up far oftener than a motor able to manage only one, and it sits at the inexpensive end of this job.

### Is it worth fixing lights on a hood we rarely use?

Indoors, it is cosmetic and you can decide. Outdoors it is worth looking at, because a light that has failed on a terrace is usually water announcing itself somewhere that will matter more later.
