Is anything stored against the vent — a bag of charcoal, a box, a shelf added later? Is the grille clear? Feel whether the cabinet the unit sits in is hot. Then, with the power off, look at the condenser coil through the grille: if it is grey with dust and lint, that alone can account for the whole complaint. ### Ventilation is a repair, and it is the cheapest one An undercounter refrigerator moves heat from inside the cabinet to the air around it. If that air has nowhere to go, the heat has nowhere to go, and the machine runs continuously reaching a temperature it cannot beat. It is the single highest-yield thing to clean on this machine and on this coast it is a yearly job. The door seal has stopped gripping Warm humid air arriving continuously. A gasket can look perfect and have lost its set, and undercounter doors fail at the bottom where nobody looks. How hot is the cabinet it sits in? Put a hand in beside it after the grill has been running. If that space is hot, the machine is being given an impossible job. Is anything blocking the vent? Things get stored in islands. A bag pushed against the grille will stop a cabinet cooling as completely as a failed compressor. Was it fine last summer? A cabinet that managed last August and cannot manage this one has usually loaded its condenser rather than lost its refrigerant. What it should not do is run all the time and still be warm inside. Continuous running with a correct interior temperature is a machine working hard; continuous running with a warm interior is the complaint on this page. ### Would shading the island help? Genuinely, yes. Direct afternoon sun on a stone island puts heat into the whole structure, and the cabinet inside it is trying to reject heat into that.
