# DCS grill flame is yellow or orange

### What to do in the next ten minutes

Turn it off and let it go completely cold. Take out the grates and the radiants and look along the burner: blocked ports show as a row of holes that are darker than the rest. Then look into the burner inlet and the venturi tube, which is the tube the burner slides onto — an obstruction there is usually visible with a torch. Do not run the grill in the meantime.

### Why yellow is an air problem

The burner is not simply a pipe with holes in it. Gas leaves a small orifice at speed and drags air in behind it through the venturi, and the two arrive at the ports already mixed. Block the air side and there is too much gas for the air available: the flame gets long, lazy and yellow, and it deposits carbon instead of burning it. So the tube, not the burner face, is where the looking starts.

### The seasonal version

Insects nesting in a venturi tube is not an exotic finding in this market — it is close to an annual one, and it is worst on grills that are covered and unused for a stretch. A cover keeps rain off and also makes a still, dark cavity. The practical answer is to run the grill occasionally through the quiet months and to look into the tubes before the first cook of the season rather than during it.

Something is obstructing the venturi

A nest, a web or debris in the tube that mixes air with the gas. It starves the air side and the flame turns yellow immediately. Seasonal and very common on grills that are covered for months.

The burner ports are loaded

Grease and carbon built up along the burner change the way gas leaves it. Usually gradual, usually worst near the back where it is least often cleaned.

The regulator has gone into limiting mode

When every burner is lazy and yellow at once, the machine is being starved from upstream rather than blocked downstream, and that is the regulator or the supply.

One burner or all of them?

Worth settling before anything else. A single burner is a mechanical matter within it; the full set is supply, and scrubbing will not touch it.

Is there soot on the hood or on the food?

Black deposit means it has been running like this for a while. That matters because the soot itself then needs cleaning out of the grease path.

When was it last used?

A grill coming out of a long covered spell is a different suspect list from one used every weekend. Say which when you call.

Blue flame gone lazy and yellow-tipped

What it usually means

Nine times in ten the air side is starved, not the gas side

A lone offender is local; the whole set accuses the regulator

A grill left under a cover all summer is an invitation to a nest

### Is it dangerous to cook on?

It is not a leak, and the grill is not about to do anything dramatic. But it produces soot and carbon monoxide in a way a correctly mixing flame does not, it makes the food taste of it, and whatever is causing it is getting worse rather than better. We would clear it before the next dinner rather than after it.

### Can I clean the venturi myself?

With the gas off at the source and the burner completely cold, yes — the tubes can usually be cleared with a flexible brush once the burner is out. What we would not do is poke the ports with wire, which enlarges them permanently and gives you a different problem.
