Run the motor with nothing on the spit — if it turns freely, the motor is fine and the load was the problem. Separately, light the rear burner and hold the dial in for a full twenty seconds before releasing it; a flame supervision device needs time to sense flame, and releasing too early produces exactly this symptom in a machine with nothing wrong with it. ### Why the burner is allowed to cut itself off A rear burner runs unattended for a long time behind whatever is on the spit. If it went out and the gas kept coming, the firebox would fill. The supervision device exists so that cannot happen: it senses flame, and when it cannot, it closes the valve. The spit or bracket is binding Corroded brackets, a bent spit, or a load fitted off-center. The motor then works against itself and the symptom is a motor that hums and stalls. Not lighting at all is ignition. Lighting and dying is supervision. They are different parts and different prices. It cooks differently — more radiant heat from below rather than behind — and it puts drippings onto the burners rather than into the tray, so watch for flare-ups if what you are cooking is fatty. ### The motor makes a noise but does not turn. That is nearly always load rather than motor. Take everything off the spit and try it again.
