Close the supply — the cylinder valve, or the wall valve on natural gas. Do not operate the ignitor, a light switch or anything else nearby that could spark. If the smell is strong, or if it continues with the supply closed, leave the area and call the gas supplier rather than us. Otherwise leave it shut off until somebody has looked. ### Why there is no procedure on this page Everywhere else on this site we set out what an owner can check before calling anybody, because most of the time that saves them money. Here we do not, and the reason is simple: every sensible test involves the gas being on, and there is no version of this we would want somebody doing on their own terrace. Shut it off and let it wait. Nothing is lost by a day without the grill. ### The joints nobody has ever seen When an outdoor kitchen is built, the gas run is made, tested and then closed inside masonry. From that day it is invisible, and the air it is sitting in carries salt. That is the single reason we treat gas supply work on outdoor islands as its own service rather than as part of a repair — the fittings age on a schedule nobody is watching, and the only way to know is to open it and look. A joint or fitting has failed Salt air reaches the connections under an island, and those are the ones never inspected in the normal course of things. A joint sound three seasons ago is not automatically sound today. The flexible connector has been damaged Movement, heat, or something stored against it inside the cabinet. It is a wear item and it lives where nobody looks. A burner valve is passing Gas arriving at the burner with the dial nominally off. Less common than the fittings, and the reason we test rather than assume where the smell is from. Does the smell persist with the supply closed? If it does, treat it as an emergency and call the gas supplier. That is beyond an appliance repair. Is it only when a dial is turned on? Gas at an unlit burner with the dial on is a different and lesser thing than gas with everything off, but both need looking at. Has anything been stored in the island cabinet? Bags, tools and charcoal pushed in against a flexible connector are a routine finding and a genuine cause. It is the right test and it is what we use, but it means turning the gas back on to do it. If you are confident about where the smell is and comfortable with the supply on briefly, it will show you. If there is any doubt at all, leave it off and let somebody else do it. ### How quickly can you come? Tell us it is a gas smell when you call and we will treat it accordingly.
