With the hood off and cool, take the filters out and look at the impeller: heavy uneven grease on the blades is a common and visible cause. Do not run it hard while you are deciding if something sounds like it is coming loose. ### Why we would rather see it noisy There is a window between a blower that has started making a noise and a blower that has damaged its own housing, and it is usually months long. Inside that window the repair is a motor or a clean and a balance. Outside it, the housing is scored and the job is considerably larger. On some hoods it is reachable with the filters out and on others it is not. Where it is, degreasing it carefully with the power off at the breaker is genuinely useful. What we would avoid is levering at the blades, which unbalances the wheel far more effectively than grease does. ### It only rattles when it starts up. That is a classic loose-mount or loose-panel symptom — the rattle appears while the motor passes through a particular speed on its way up and disappears above it.
