The hood makes the right noise and shifts almost nothing. Is it ducted or recirculating? Look for a duct leaving the top or the back. Nothing leaving means nothing leaves, and repairs will not alter that. Can you see light through the filters? Toward daylight. If they are opaque, run them through a dishwasher and retest before anybody is called out — free, and often the end of it. Does the exterior flap open with the fan on? Thirty seconds outdoors. A flap that has been painted over or colonized halts the whole system and is completely hidden from indoors. Far more frequently than they are. With burners of this output and a griddle in the mix, once a month is a reasonable rhythm, and a dishwasher does the work. What convinces people is not the advice but the airflow the first time they do it. ### Could a filtering hood be re-plumbed to vent outside? Occasionally, and the answer is written in the structure overhead. A straightforward path to an outside wall or up through a roof makes it worth quoting; a canopy buried beneath two storeys of house generally does not.
