Symptom
DCS outdoor drawers and doors seized
DCS outdoor kitchen drawers stuck. Hardware is what salt reaches first, and it fails in a predictable sequence: stiff, then sticky, then forced, then a bent drawer front or a frame pulled out of square. Catching it at stiff is inexpensive. Catching it after somebody has put their shoulder into a stuck drawer is a different order of work, and it is why the opening question when you ring is which of those two you have.

Three ordinary causes
What this usually turns out to be
Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.
-
Salt film has dried in the runner
Airborne salt settles, water evaporates, and what is left is abrasive and hygroscopic. The earliest stage and the only one that cleaning genuinely fixes.

The runner has pitted
Once the surface is pocked, the bearings run rough and no amount of cleaning restores it. Worst at the back of the travel, where the drawer is least often pushed.

The cabinet has moved
An island that has settled, or a door whose hinge has dropped, takes the frame out of square. The hardware then binds however good it is.

01
Stiff or stuck?
Reluctant still completes its travel under pressure. Immovable either refuses from the start or halts partway and will go no further. Two repairs, not one.
-
02
Is it worse at the back of the travel?
Almost always, and it tells us the pitting is where the runner is least used rather than where the most weight sits.
-
03
Does the door close square?
Look at the gap top and bottom. A door closing out of square is a hinge or a cabinet problem, and the hardware is a symptom.

Narrow it down before anybody arrives
A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem before anybody opens anything, which is why it is worth photographing before it clears.

About DCS outdoor drawers and doors seized
What to do in the next ten minutes
Stop forcing it. If a drawer is stiff rather than jammed, rinse the runners with fresh water and dry them, then work it gently through its full travel a few times — salt film that has not yet pitted will often release. If it is genuinely stuck, leave it: the next pull is what bends the front.
Why this is the first thing to fail
Everything gas-fired on an outdoor island gets hot, and heat drives moisture off. Drawer runners never get hot. They sit in the same salt-laden air as everything else with nothing to dry them, they are made of moving parts with tight tolerances, and they are asked to keep working for a decade. Budgeting for hardware is the difference between an island that stays usable and one that quietly becomes a row of cabinets nobody opens.
The cost of one more pull
The moment that turns a hardware job into a cabinet job is nearly always somebody deciding the drawer will open if they pull hard enough. It does open, and it takes the front, the frame or the fixings with it. If a drawer has stopped moving, the cheapest thing an owner can do is leave it alone until it can be looked at.

Questions about DCS outdoor drawers and doors seized
Would a spray lubricant help?
On a stiff runner, briefly. On a pitted one it masks the symptom while the abrasion continues, and most sprays attract more salt and grit than they repel. Fresh water and drying does more good, and where the runner has pitted, replacement is the honest answer.
Can the runners be upgraded?
The right grade for a marine-adjacent install is not always what was fitted, particularly on islands assembled by a general contractor. Where we are replacing them anyway, fitting hardware appropriate to how close you are to the water costs little more and lasts considerably longer.
