Symptom

DCS grill will not light

DCS grill will not light. Nothing here displays anything, so the work is done from four things an owner already knows: how many burners are affected, what has happened at the cylinder lately, whether a match succeeds where the spark does not, and whether there is any smell of gas. That last one ends the process on the spot. The other three separate a supply problem from an ignition problem from a burner problem, and in this market the first is far commoner than people expect.

Three ordinary causes

What this usually turns out to be

Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.

  • The supply is restricted rather than absent

A limiter that has closed down, or a wall valve short of fully open, delivers enough to seem plausible and too little to ignite. We find this more than anything else on the outdoor half, and putting it right is free.

  • The ignition path has corroded

Electrode, ceramic, lead and the earth it bolts to. On a waterfront terrace these are consumables — salt cracks the insulator and the spark then jumps somewhere useless while looking perfectly healthy.

Ignition and electrode service from $135
  • The burner ports are blocked

Grease, carbon, or an insect nest in the venturi tube. A burner that cannot pass gas evenly will light badly or not at all, and after a summer under a cover the nest is the likely one.

In five minutes

Before you call anybody

None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.

  1. 01

Is it one burner or all of them?

A solitary one sends us into that burner's own components. The whole set sends us upstream to cylinder, regulator or manifold, where nothing under the hood has any bearing.

  2. 02

Will it light from a match?

With the dial on and a long match at the burner. If it lights, gas is arriving and the problem is the spark — which is the cheaper half.

  3. 03

Has the cylinder been changed recently?

A new cylinder opened quickly is the classic version of this. Close it, wait, and open the valve slowly before deciding anything is broken.

How it shows up

What people describe when they call

  • “How many burners are affected cuts the search in half before anyone arrives”
  • “Lights from a match but not from the ignitor: the gas is fine, the spark is not”
  • “A cylinder valve opened too quickly trips a limiter and starves the whole grill”

Two shortcuts

Narrow it down before anybody arrives

A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem, and the model number says which parts to bring. Either one shortens the visit; both together usually settle it.

If there is no code at all

About DCS grill will not light

What to do in the next ten minutes

Dials to off, all of them. Confirm the cylinder or wall valve is right open, and after a recent cylinder swap: shut it, pause a minute, then ease it open slowly — a brisk opening trips the limiter inside the valve and starves everything downstream. Light one burner only. Any smell of gas at all and this stops: close the supply, leave the ignitor alone.

There is no code, and that is the point

Every other make on this fleet answers this question with a string on a display. A DCS grill has neither, and its own user guide writes the whole troubleshooting section as questions rather than codes. So the sentences an owner can supply — how many burners, whether a match works, what changed — are not background information. They are the diagnosis, and a caller who has them has usually saved themselves a visit.

Why we ask about the cylinder first

The flow limiting device inside an LP cylinder valve exists to stop a large escape of gas, and it cannot tell the difference between a broken hose and a valve opened briskly. Once it has closed down, the grill gets a trickle: it will light one burner feebly, or not at all, and every symptom points inwards at the machine. Resetting it takes a minute and no tools, and it is the first thing worth trying before anybody is called out.

Questions about DCS grill will not light

Can I keep pressing the ignitor?

Please do not. Every press with the dial on releases more gas into the firebox, and if it does light after several attempts it lights all of it at once. Turn everything off, give it a minute to clear, and start again — or stop and call somebody.

It lit fine last week.

That is useful rather than puzzling. Something changed in between, and it is usually the cylinder, a cover left on through rain, or a season's worth of insects finding the venturi tubes. We will ask what the grill has been doing since the last time it worked.

Tell us the model number and what it is doing.
